The business was established in 1985, and the brand’s products are available in department stores and more than 2,000 independent retail locations worldwide. The business was bought by the private equity firm Apax Partners in 2006 for $1.6 billion. The business was acquired by PVH Corp. (formerly known as Phillips−Van Heusen) in March 2010. While Tommy Hilfiger, the company’s creator, continues to serve as its chief designer, heading the design teams and supervising the entire creative process, Daniel Grieder was named CEO in July 2014. The brand generated $6.4 billion in global retail sales in 2013 and $6.7 billion in 2014.
When he co−founded the People’s Place apparel and record store in upstate New York in 1968, Tommy Hilfiger’s career in fashion officially got underway. He oversaw the company’s growth into a chain of ten stores, using $150 he had saved from working at a gas station as beginning capital. Even though it had some success at first, People’s Place declared bankruptcy in 1977. In order to pursue a career as a fashion designer, Hilfiger relocated to New York City in 1979. He worked on a variety of labels, including Jordache Jeans.
In a deal worth approximately $7 billion more than PVH had spent on Calvin Klein in 2003, Phillips−Van Heusen (PVH Corp.) purchased the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation in March 2010 for $3 billion. As CEO of Hilfiger, Fred Gehring took over after establishing the company’s European business in 1996. The brand’s global retail sales in 2013 and 2014 were $6.4 billion and $6.7 billion, respectively.
With its Hilfiger Collection, Tommy Hilfiger Tailored, men’s, women’s, and children’s sportswear, denim, accessories, and footwear, Tommy Hilfiger offers a wide range of products under the Tommy Hilfiger and Hilfiger Denim brands. The name is additionally licensed for a variety of goods, including perfumes, eyewear, watches, and home furnishings.
The Tommy Hilfiger Corporation’s main line, Tommy, is inspired by traditional American style, or more particularly, what the business refers to as “preppy with a twist.” This influence can be seen in all of the company’s other products. Ages 25 to 40 are the target market for this product.
Aiming at both men and women between the ages of 18 and 30, Hilfiger Denim is more laid−back than the Tommy Hilfiger brand. In addition to jeans, the range features denim separates, purses, shoes, accessories, eyewear, and fragrances.
For women, the Hilfiger Collection offers clothing that combines traditional American inspirations with modern trends. The clothing was marketed toward women aged 25 to 40. New York Fashion Week is when the designs periodically make their debut.
American clothing brand Tommy Hilfiger Tailored targets the 25 to 40 age group. With an emphasis on “precise fit, quality materials, updated cuts, rich colors, and luxurious touches,” as stated on the Tommy Hilfiger Group website, styles range from formal suits to casual clothing.
In a class−action lawsuit brought about by allegations that designer clothing was being produced in sweatshop conditions in Saipan in the late 1990s, Tommy Hilfiger and other major American textile businesses, including Calvin Klein and Sears, were named as defendants. In March 2000, Tommy Hilfiger promised to allow independent inspection of their manufacturing on the island following a collective settlement that denied any liability. The Tommy Hilfiger Corporation was listed as one of the factory’s customers in a March 2012 ABC article that detailed a factory fire in Bangladesh that claimed the lives of 29 workers. In response, PVH Corp. sent a press statement announcing their commitment to a two−year program to support safety programs, for which they would donate $1 million.
Tommy Hilfiger, an advertisement and graphic designer, was engaged by Tommy Hilfiger in 1985 to create a billboard for Times Square in New York City to aid in the debut of his first collection. Instead of models, the advertisement highlighted the letters of three well−known fashion designers; “PE” for Perry Ellis, “RL” for Ralph Lauren, and “CK” for Calvin Klein—and declared that “TH” (Tommy Hilfiger) was the upcoming great menswear designer. The billboard successfully raised awareness of the name Tommy Hilfiger and caused a sensation in the fashion press.
