Natural disasters are uncalled for in the lives of people. It imparts a long-lasting negative impact on the livelihoods of people. In the aftermath of the disastrous events, various relief measures are implemented by the authorities. These operations are conducted by the authorities and non-profit organizations alike under the department of disaster management. Apart from relief operations this department also involves the people in various activities associated with safety measures during these calamities to mitigate the impact of damages in future. In the case of disaster management technology plays a major role in warning the people and reducing the damages.
Under the guidelines of disaster management policies, the local authorities underline various rules and guidelines associated with the structure of the buildings in the local region. In order to prevent the impact of disasters warnings are issued before the advent of the disasters like floods or cyclones through loudspeakers to aware people of the oncoming weather event (healthychildren, 2022). As opined by McEntire (2021), residents are made aware of certain guidelines that deem fit for the situation to void any unfortunate incidents. It is always advised to keep necessary pieces of equipment handy.
In the cyclone and flood-prone areas, buildings are regularly checked for cracks and crevices. The unfastened materials that might blow away and cause damage to people are taken aside. Emergency addresses and helpline phone numbers are provided to people. During the onslaught of the disaster, the electrical connections are all disconnected and even the gas supplies are turned off. People then are advised to move on to the higher ground or appropriate shelters. A safety kit including stove, cooking utensils, first aid kits and ropes are to be kept close.
Figure 1: safety protocols during a disaster
After the course of disasters, electrical connections and gas lines are checked for any kind of leakage or moisture. Repair works begin for the buildings and roads that were damaged during disasters. It is advised to carry a boob stick to bar off snakes and insects from the affected areas.
Cyclones resonate with a violent form of natural activity that destroys everything in an around its path. Before the advent of such instances, it is always advised to maintain certain protocols for safety. Various safety measures are necessary to abide by during a cyclone. It is always advised to keep emergency kits handy, phones and laptops are to be kept fully charged. It is necessary to keep candles in case of an electricity outage (oneindia, 2022). Before the advent of cyclones, roof sheds are to be repaired and any loose poles and rods are needed to be tied well before the storm hits the ground.
Figure 2: safety protocols during cyclone
Flood is considered one of the natural disasters and some safety protocols are important for this natural disaster. It is seen that during flood some community warning service is needed like loudspeakers. Shelters for the homeless persons and some food for the survivors are needed in this natural disaster (Godigit, 2022).
Flood shelters can e the best houses for the inhabitants of the affected area. People should be made aware of keeping them safe from the weak walls and window sills so that the natural calamity cannot affect them. Proper arrangements for moving the passengers forward are also needed.
Figure 3: Role of technology
Technology has different roles in safety measurements for natural disasters. Among them internet, Satellite, and Weather Radar plays important role in natural disasters. Internet helps in communicating in the location of a disaster (Inthefieldstories, 2022). It helps to provide rapid information in the time of natural disaster. Satellites are applied for the detection of tropical cyclones.
Techniques help in deciding the strength of the cyclone. The data is also used for the measurement of floods. Weather Radar is used for deciding the rainfall of the coastal area and it decides the possible locations of the storms. Technology helps in detecting various matters and in solving problems regarding natural disasters.
Safety Measures Technology plays an important role in the safety purpose of natural calamity or natural disaster. The technologies help in detecting the centre of the cyclone, the rainfall ad different factors related to the disaster. Therefore, it is seen that technology has a great role in saving inhabitants from natural disasters. That is why safety measures is important in this field.
Q1. What is the concept of natural disaster?
Ans. Natural disaster is an adverse event that is arisen from the natural phenomena of the Earth. Some natural disasters are dust storms, floods, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, firestorms, tornadoes, earthquakes, storms and tsunamis. Rescue operations are needed for the purpose of natural disasters.
Q2. What is the need for weather radar in the time of natural disasters?
Ans. Weather radar plays an important role in the time of natural disaster. This radar gives the facility through which the rainfall and speed of wind can be defined. It helps in detecting possible locations of tornados as well as the centre of cyclones.
Q3. How do satellites work in the time of natural disasters?
Ans. Satellites help in mapping and analyzing tropical cyclones. There are different methods for finding the strength of cyclones and other winds. The use of satellites can be done for gathering data on flood assessment, flood inundation, flood hazard charting, and past flood analysis.
Q4. What does it mean by earthquake and tropical cyclone?
Ans. Earthquake mainly refers to the shaking of earth’s surface, the result of it is a quick discharge of energy in the lithosphere, and it produces seismic waves. On the other hand, a tropical cyclone means a swiftly rotating storm phenomenon. This creates heavy rain and due to it, natural disasters occur.
