According to a survey, more than 10% of females have never experienced an orgasm in their lives. Whereas many women also have unsatisfied sexual stimulation when they experience orgasm. Orgasms are powerful releases of excitement that occur during sexual stimulation, and the experience varies from person to person. Although orgasms can happen with little to no sexual stimulation, there are situations when significantly more stimulation is required.
Female orgasmic disorder or Orgasmic dysfunction occurs when a women struggle to reach orgasm during sexual arousal. Orgasmic dysfunction in women also leads to unsatisfied sex life with their partners, creating conflicts and dissatisfaction in the future.
According to studies, it affects 11–41% of women globally and can significantly affect a person's quality of life, pleasure in their relationships, and overall wellbeing. Female orgasmic disorder (FOD) is a persistent or repeated absence of orgasm following a "typical" sexual excitation phase. FOD is a widespread issue that significantly affects the sexual function of women. The origin of Female orgasmic disorder can be multifaceted in that it pertains to heredity, medical disorders, drugs, alcohol, smoking, other sexual problems, mental illness, life stressors, communication impairment, and interpersonal challenges among couples.
It is hard to find the root cause of orgasmic dysfunction in females. There may be physical, emotional, mental, or psychological barriers that prevent them from experiencing orgasm. Potential contributing elements include:
A history of sexual abuse experience
Disinterest in sexual activity with the partner
Lack of awareness or knowledge of sexual intercourse or arousal
Negative approach to sexual intercourse
Issues with partner
Some causes of not reaching the orgasm also relate to physical and health issues, and Hormonal imbalance or disorders might be a cause of it. Health issues and interest in sexual life are caused by chronic conditions (conditions such as endometriosis, persistent pain in the pelvic, diabetes, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis).
Three common signs indicate orgasmic dysfunction in women: inability to have an orgasm, reaching orgasm more slowly than desired, or having uncomfortable orgasms with or without their partner. Many factors can impact and cause difficulty for women in achieving an orgasm. Inability to orgasm can cause distress, making it even more difficult to attain orgasm in the future. Women with orgasmic dysfunction may struggle to achieve orgasm during sexual intercourse or masturbation.
Orgasmic dysfunction in women is a condition with numerous manifestations and causes. It can happen at any time during sexual stimulation. The following are the types of orgasmic dysfunction that may occur:
Primary: When a woman has never had an orgasm.
Secondary: A woman has difficulty experiencing orgasm, despite having experienced it once.
Situational: When women are unable to achieve orgasm in certain situations.
General Disorder: An inability to achieve orgasm under any circumstances, even when you are highly aroused.
The primary objective of treatment for female orgasmic disorder (FOD) is to enable the patient to experience orgasm whenever desired, regardless of the situation. Psychological treatment has been demonstrated to be beneficial in assisting women with FOD to achieve or regain the ability to have orgasms. Among the treatment modalities studied, the most consistent support appears for directed masturbation, sensate attention, and psychotherapy. Bibliotherapy, systematic desensitization, and coital alignment technique training approaches have shown minimal evidence of treatment. Some studies showed conflicting evidence about the efficacy of psychoanalytic or psychodynamic therapy for FOD.
Orgasmic dysfunction has no single and approved treatment, and female orgasmic disorder can cause much distress and conflicts among partners. Studies showed that behavioral exercises, communication skill development, sex education, and some psychological therapies could encourage attitude toward sex and reduce anxiety and distress resulting from it.
