Reading is a remarkable human accomplishment because it involves the synchronized mastery of a grouping of perceptual and mental procedures ranging from basic sensory understanding to acceptance of lexical items, word fluency, cornea control, and all the greater linguistic processes necessary to recover the significance of the written words. In addition to the difficulty of disentangling each approach, the complexity of figuring out how all of them fit together to function is enormous. Early reading models were often of the box-and-arrow kind.
There is widespread agreement among contemporary theories of graphic word acceptance that words are recognized hierarchically on the basic principle of their components, such as in the integrative approach, even though the earliest hypotheses of visual sight words claimed that phrases were recognized as wholes on the grounds of their shapes. The optical characteristics that make it up letters (such as a horizontal bar) are represented in memory, and this information is mapped into letter representations in memory.
